CASINGS

Utility Knife Garment

For this project, I designed and built a case for a utility knife. The purpose of the design was not to protect the knife, but rather enhance its features. The sharp angles reference the knife's purpose - cutting - and the corridor down the center highlights the forward motion of the blade. The case was designed to be glueless and tapeless, made solely from cuts in the paper, thus being entirely constructed from the object it will contain.

Container for A Plant

For this project, I designed and built a container for a plant by patterning a single joint. The joint was based off of similar joints I used in my Utility Knife Garment project above. I chose this joint because I wanted my container to be sturdy, but also flexible so that it could adapt to the changes of the plant growing inside it. In this way, my container is not only designed to hold plants, but also to express the idea of growth. The bottom images are the plan and elevation drawings for my finished container. I drew them without perspective so that the individual joint can be distinguished. Because these drawings are not in perspective, I denoted portions of the container that are further back in space by using lighter lines.
